Saturday rose rainy. We opened the windows and sat around in the dining room pretending to work but actually just working on nothing. For six hours straight, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, we played Coughcool’s last LP Lately. 

There’s nothing to these tracks. Literally any idea could be a song. But Coughcool isn’t really about songcraft. Steely Dan they’re not. They’ve never been about the slayed guitar solo or syncopation or 3rds. They’re not gonna put you on your ass and make you want to quit playing the guitar. That’s not why I’m listening in the first place. 

If anything can be a song, what then determines what a song is?

Taste.

And that’s what Coughcool brings every time - impeccable vodka numbed taste. Oh, that 10 seconds from that song you loved? It’s kind of right here, sort of, but we built something on top of it and now it’s 3 minutes long.

Coughcool is right, about a lot of things. About more things than most people.
